And the holiday season is fading away.... Christmas decorations coming down, people drooling / fretting (as applicable) over their gifts, back to the daily routine...

So what did I get during these happy times?? I got myself...two...metallic and rubbery....round and slightly worn out....cycle tyres!!!!! Yea...not one..but two!!! Okie..here's the story. My work timings have been quite odd of late...usually all the way till 11pm. And as the wonderful city of Perth does not offer reasonable public transportation beyond the hours of 6pm, I have to cycle to and from work. And I found nothing wrong in chaining my bike to a post outside the store. Till a few weeks back that is. I come out from work, my bike still chained to the post. Just missing a few minor details....tyres...gears and brakes!! Talk about good Christmas spirit huh? A call to the local bike shop the next day told me that if I had to get replacements...it would costs me quite a bomb! So here's what I came up with. Uni is over, hols are on...and most students at the housing are either on vacation or have finished their courses. As a result, the bike shed is filled with dozens of cycles...most just rotting away. So grabbed a couple of tools, and along with my friend, we salvaged parts from various bikes...wheels...gears...brakes etc etc. I just hope that the bikes we tore apart were actually abandoned. If their owners do come back at the start of the semester....oh well...too bad ;)

And let's not forget the portable music player! Oh yes...another Christmas gift... I was sent a 'Chinese Ipod Wannabe clone'....or more commonly known as a 'Chipod'. These cheap Chinese players have recently been flooding the market, mostly on eBay. Anyhow, I got one of 'em from back home. Build quality was quite poor, but beyond that it seemed pretty OK. So I plugged it in, and it 'Claimed' to be a 2GB player. But as I started pouring in files beyond a couple of MB's....the files seemed to get corrupted. And every time I tried to play something, the player would automatically restart. Couple of hrs of tweaking...internet searching and I finally found the problem. What our clever Chinese friends have been doing is this....they 'claim' to sell 4GB players...but where GB is not GigaBytes but GigaBITS!! And 4 GigaBITS = 512MB!! And they 'hack' the software to read 2GB or 4Gb or whatever, while the actual capacity is less. So when you try to pour files into this 'non-existent' space, the files get corrupted!! When you format the player...it overrides the software hack and displays it true capacity...in my case 50MB!!! Yayy for me!!!! (for all you ppl plannin on gettin such 'chipods'...do take a read here). So I guess there is some substance in the saying...'Made in China...Made cleverly...verryy cleverly ;-)'

Cheers...and hope everyone else had as good a Christmas as me...(,")
